each of the two Officers referred to above for house allowance. From the outbreak of War until my resignation (with the exception of the first month when I was paid at the same rate as an Infantry Lieut.-Colonel) I was granted an allowance of 85 per diem plus

ration allowance, in addition to the com.and allowance.

4.

That I have always taken un active interest

in the Volunteer movement, and have had nearly 37 years service at home and in Hongkong. Tith what mes aura of success my period

of command was attended is shown by the very large number of

former or present members who had served under me at one time or

another who fought on the different Fronts in the late war. In the

absence of statistics, not yet complete, it is estimated by the

Adjutant that 400 or more former or present members of the Corps,

of whom at least 25 per cent wore given Commissions, joined His

Majesty'e Forces. One V.C., five or six D.S.08., and ten or

twelve M.Čs. are among the Honours won which are already know.

5.

In view of the points mentioned above and of

my long service of more than 24 years in the Corps, I have the honour to ask His Excellency the Officer Administering the Government may be pleased to recommed to the Secratary of State that I be granted an additional personal allowance of, at least, the 8900 per annum formerly drawn by me, instead of the $300 per

nnum proposed,

I have etc.,

(Sa.) Arthur Chapman,

Lieutenant-Colonel,

late Commandant, Hongkong Volunteer Corps.
